Picking the Perfect Puppy: Does Generation Matter?

Some will tell you generation only matters to breeders - and it does. However, it also matters to those looking for the perfect 50/50 temperament or a higher generation for more hypoallergenic qualities.

One of the reasons generation matters to Deaz Doodle Ranch is we are members of the American Cockapoo Club. This is a group of breeders and Cockapoo lovers who are working toward making the Cockapoo a breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. To do so, you need several generations (7+) with the perfect qualities of that breed. Deaz Doodle Ranch is currently breeding for 5th-generation Cockapoos.

What is a Generation? In crossbreeds, generations determine how far the puppy is from the original cross. When two purebreds are crossed, it is called outcrossing. The generations to follow are called filiar generations.  These are often referred to as F1, F2, etc.

Generations of a Cockapoo

As you can see from the chart above, the first outcrossing is the F1 Generation, a purebred Cocker Spaniel (or Golden Retriever/Bernese Mtn Dog) bred with a purebred Poodle.

If an F1 dog from that litter breeds to another, unrelated F1, the resulting litter would be F2 generation puppies.

In instances where you are looking for the well-balanced manners of a Cockapoo, Goldendoodle, or Bernedoodle, OR non-shedding and allergy-friendly is extremely important to you, these distinctions come into play, specifically when looking at a "b" or a "bb".

The "b" is added to the generation number when the Cockapoo is bred "back" to a Poodle. Combined with the best genetics, F1b, F2b, F3b and higher tend to be the most hypo-allergenic of the breed. This does mean in many cases your puppy will have a curlier coat (75% Poodle).

If you ever come across a "bb" litter, this is likely a breed "back" to a Cocker Spaniel, indicating less hypoallergenic qualities but more like a soft, wavier coat.
